How to choose a car for taxi work in Poland

White Toyota Corolla estate

A good car for taxi work in Poland is one that is accepted in your city and leaves you an income after all costs. Before buying or renting, check the exact model, year and Uber, Bolt or FreeNow category. The model name alone is not enough.

🚖 Before you choose

  • First confirm that the car is accepted in your chosen city and service.
  • Compare monthly costs and downtime, rather than the car’s price alone.
  • Before paying, check the mechanical condition, documents and contract terms.

Which cars qualify for taxi work in Poland?

Check three separate things: the city’s transport requirements, the platform’s rules and eligibility for the specific category. A car accepted in a standard category may not qualify for Comfort, Premium or XL.

  • The actual car. Check the model, generation, year, number of seats and doors. Give your account manager the registration details and, when buying, the VIN as well.
  • City and category. Check the current accepted-model list for the place where you plan to work. Do not buy a car for a higher category based only on the seller’s assurance.
  • Documents and registration. Before starting, check the registration certificate, valid insurance and roadworthiness inspection, the vehicle’s taxi licence extract and the required city markings.

Uber’s general requirements include 4–5 doors, left-hand drive, at least five seats on the registration certificate, EU registration, valid insurance and a technical inspection. Bolt also requires at least four doors, four passenger seats, a roadworthy vehicle and third-party liability insurance (OC); vehicle age limits depend on the category. Use this as an initial check and make the final decision using the current rules for your service and city. Uber requirements · Bolt requirements.

Your own car or a rental: what to compare

Choose based on your planned mileage, how long you intend to work and your willingness to handle servicing. Neither buying nor renting automatically guarantees a higher income.

How to calculate the cost of a taxi car

Compare the same period and mileage. Trip revenue and the amount left for the driver are different figures. Separately account for platform commissions, partner charges and the mandatory payments that apply to your circumstances.

Monthly vehicle costs = rental or ownership costs + fuel or charging + servicing and repairs + insurance and paperwork + cleaning, parking and other expenses.

  • Fuel. Monthly mileage ÷ 100 × actual consumption per 100 km × price per litre. For an electric car, use kWh per 100 km and your charging price.
  • Servicing. Budget for tyres, fluids, scheduled maintenance and a reserve for faults. Find out which items are already included in the rental so you do not count them twice.
  • Depreciation. For a car you own, account for the difference between its purchase price and expected resale price after your planned ownership period.
  • Downtime. Estimate how many working days repairs could cost you and what happens to your fixed payments during that time.

Illustrative example: at 5,000 km, consumption of 6 l/100 km and a fuel price of PLN 6.50 per litre, fuel alone costs PLN 1,950. This illustrates the calculation; it is neither a forecast for a particular model nor a current fuel-price quote. Use your own figures.

Hybrid, petrol, LPG or electric?

The powertrain label is not a substitute for a calculation. For a particular car, what matters is its condition, actual consumption on your routes, servicing costs and how quickly you can return to work after a fault.

  • Hybrid. Compare urban consumption, and have a specialist check the hybrid system and traction battery before buying.
  • Petrol. Check oil consumption, servicing history, the engine and gearbox. A low purchase price does not make up for constant repairs.
  • LPG. Include petrol use, gas-system servicing and installation documents in your calculation. Check that the specific engine is compatible with the system.
  • Electric. Plan where you will charge, what it will cost, how long charging will take and whether the range covers your shift.

Toyota Prius, Auris and Corolla can be a starting point for comparison. Assess the actual vehicle, however: its generation, engine, year, condition and category eligibility. The brand does not replace an inspection.

Checklist before buying or renting

  1. Confirm model and year eligibility for the chosen city and category.
  2. Match the VIN and seller’s or rental provider’s details to the documents.
  3. Check servicing history, mileage and inspection results.
  4. Inspect the body, interior, tyres, brakes, suspension and air conditioning.
  5. For a hybrid or electric car, separately check the traction battery and relevant systems.
  6. Check insurance, the roadworthiness inspection and documents needed for taxi work.
  7. Read the deposit, repair, insurance-claim, mileage-limit and return terms.
  8. Prepare a monthly cost calculation and keep a reserve for unexpected expenses.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best car for taxi work?

One that is accepted in your city and category, has passed an inspection and suits your total-cost budget. Compare several actual cars using the same monthly mileage.

Can I work with my own car?

Yes, if it meets the requirements of the chosen service and city and has the necessary documents for the work. Confirm eligibility before taking trips.

Is buying or renting more cost-effective?

That depends on how long you will work, mileage, the purchase or rental price, servicing and downtime risk. The result can differ between a short trial period and long-term regular work.

What is the oldest eligible model year?

There is no single year for every service, city and category. Check the current requirements for the chosen model; do not apply one category’s limit to the entire market.
